SUCCESS STORIES / SIMULATED LEARNING
“...The course goes a long way towards helping reduce teenage pregnancy in this Yorkshire community and promoting good parenting skills for those teenagers who already have babies."
Baby Think it Over is a personal development and sexual health programme for teenage girls and boys at Brigshaw High School and Language College in Castleford. In October 2006 the Grace Foundation UK provided financial assistance to enable the school to purchase two baby simulators to maximise the learning, and teaching, potential of the course.
Each programme runs for eight weeks and covers such topics as self esteem and respect, relationships, contraception, drug and alcohol misuse during pregnancy, practical child care and parenting skills, contraception, STI’s, and the financial and emotional consequences of having a baby. Some funding was in place to start this educational course but further funding was required to buy equipment to be used in the classes. This is where the Grace Foundation UK were able to help out by funding the purchase of two Baby Simulators, a Foetal Alcohol Syndrome Manikin and a Drug Affected Demonstrator.
These life like dolls provide a realistic and accurate insight for the teenagers into caring for a baby, especially those with alcohol or drug dependency. The course goes a long way towards helping reduce teenage pregnancy in this Yorkshire community and promoting good parenting skills for those teenagers who already have babies.
